SENIOR SYSTEMS Engineer - VMWare/WINDOWS/Storage

Description:

The Sr. Systems Engineer (SE) - provides advanced subject matter expertise (SME) for systems hosted within CLASSIFIED networks in Falls Church, VA,   They are responsible for the overall architecture, integration, administration, and maintenance tasks on VMWare datacenter virtualization and storage area network (SAN) infrastructure.

 

The SE is responsible for a variety of tasks including, but not limited to: designing, integrating, deploying, and managing the virtualization and storage infrastructure, perform routine maintenance (patches, updates), application functionality and availability verifications, coordination with customers on support requirements, upgrades, support for DHHQ datacenter facility issues, and system hardware issues.

 

Additionally, the SE works with the Cybersecurity team ensuring the solutions they are responsible for are documented, maintained, and ready for risk assessment as part of a system accreditation process; this involves scanning, patching, and documenting the production hardware and software.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Principle engineer for VMWare virtualization solution (currently vSphere 7.x) environment; designs, plans and executes platform upgrade activities.
  • Principle engineer for storage/back-up solution (currently NetApp, HP C7000, Brocade, Veeam) environments; designs, integrates, plans and executes platform upgrade activities.
  • Installs, configures, maintains, administers and integrates customer systems, third party application servers, and system software and hardware within the Windows Environment.
  • Participates in or leads troubleshooting and incident resolution of complex high severity incidents.
  • Reviews, analyzes and assesses Vendor's proposed changes, upgrades and needs.
  • Coordinates and performs upgrades and patch management to Operating System (OS) and application software.
  • Investigates and proposes solutions for development and customer needs which improve reliability, continuity, and maintainability for the infrastructure systems (hardware and software).
  • Models potential changes within the systems architecture and provides a gap analysis regarding the need for tuning or changes that will enhance system performance.
  • Monitors and ensures that data backup and resilience methods are scheduled and functioning appropriately.
  • Coordinates system hardware and software testing with customer teams to ensure transparent implementation and appropriate capacity.
  • Provisions and loads PKI certificates on servers.
  • Develops documentation in support of accreditation requirements.
  • Accurately log/ticket, track, and resolve incidents using the ITSM system (i.e. ServiceNow).
  • Provide accurate, timely, and professional resolution on all supported incidents and issues.
  • Provide a high level of professionalism and customer service.
  • Provide updates to management and project leadership of ongoing projects and high priority issues.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Skills:

  • Demonstrated technical competency in the following areas:
  • VMWare datacenter virtualization within vSphere 7.x environments
  • Windows Server (2019, 2016, or 2012r2)
  • Storage Area Networks (NetApp desired)
  • Blade server systems (HP C7000 desired)
  • Network communication processes
  • Administration of Active Directory (AD) directory services, server/user security through group policy objects (GPO), Windows domain infrastructure (with multiple domains), and administration of organizational units (OU).
  • Experience with patch management using multiple tools (SCCM, WSUS, etc.).
  • Proficient with DoD security assessment/hardening tools (STIG, SCAP, checklists, Nessus, etc.).
  • Strong oral and written communications skills.
  • Proven ability to work independently with limited direct supervision.
  • Project management skills for setting priorities to meet project deadlines.
  • Ability to understand and apply knowledge of current industry standard systems architectures.
  • Strong critical thinking skills that facilitate timely problem-solving.
  • Other desired experience: SolarWinds, SCCM, VMWare Horizon, Network Administration.

 

Requirements:

  • BS Degree in Computer Science, MIS, or related field (High School Diploma and equivalent technical experience and certifications may be used in lieu of BS Degree).
  • 10+ years’ experience in a technical IT role; 12+ years without BS Degree.
  • 8+ years’ engineering or system administration experience including:
  • Windows Server (2019, 2016, or 2012r2)
  • Active Directory infrastructure (deployment/upgrades)
  • Group Policy administration/Windows security
  • 4+ years’ engineering experience designing, integrating, deploying, and upgrading VMWare datacenter and/or desktop virtualization solutions.
  • 2+ years’ engineering experience designing, integrating, deploying, and upgrading storage/back-up solutions (NetApp preferred).
  • VMware Certified Professional - Data Center Virtualization (VCP-DCV)
  • Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert (MCSE) – one or more
  • Active DoD SECRET (or above) clearance
  • Have or obtain DoD 8570 IAT Level II certification (e.g. Security + CE, etc.) within 60 days of beginning position.
  • Report in person to job site due to CLASSIFIED network security requirements.
  • Government contract requires person possess proof of U.S. citizenship.
