Advanced System Administrator


The Advanced System Administrator (SA) is responsible for managing and maintaining the hosted systems and solutions hosted within CLASSIFIED (i.e. SIPR) networks in Falls Church, VA.   The Advanced Systems Administrator assists with a variety of tasks including, but not limited to: server patching and maintenance, Active Directory (AD) infrastructure and Group Policy (GPO) administration, application functionality and availability verifications, coordination with customers on support requirements, support for DHHQ datacenter facility issues and system hardware issues.  Using VMWare the Advanced System Administrator will provide support for provisioning new servers and then applying required security patches in order to address known vulnerabilities.  Based on scans of the servers and also STIGs provided by DISA, the SA will be responsible for remediating known vulnerabilities and coordinating with the support team to provide input to certification and accreditation efforts.



  • Installs, upgrades, maintains and administers infrastructure software and hardware such as Windows Server, VMWare tools, Windows 10 OS, desktop software (e.g. web-browsers, Adobe Acrobat, etc.).
  • Integrates vendor systems, third party application servers and system software and hardware within a Windows Server environment.
  • Provides patch management by reviewing, analyzing, testing, and implementing Vendor's proposed changes, upgrades and patches; performs firmware upgrades.
  • Patches Windows Servers, Windows Operating Systems (OS), Microsoft applications, and images Windows OS workstations using Microsoft SCCM and WSUS.
  • Provides Active Directory (AD) infrastructure server and Group Policy (GPO) administration.
  • Assists with platform upgrade activities for VMWare vSphere, and ESXi.
  • Coordinates system hardware and software testing with development teams to ensure transparent implementation and appropriate capacity.
  • Investigates and proposes solutions for development and customer needs to improve reliability, continuity, and maintainability for Windows systems hardware and software.
  • Monitors and ensures that backup data and resilience methods are scheduled and functioning appropriately.
  • Resolves and documents resolution for incidents; partners across DHHQ teams to ensure continued availability.
  • Reviews the Forward Schedule of Change to ensure that capacity planning for Windows Systems software and hardware needs are available and that systems and applications will not be impacted through implementation.
  • Provides day-to-day Tier 3 support and troubleshooting for assigned systems.
  • Provisions and loads PKI certificates on servers.
  • Accurately logs tickets and tracks/owns assigned incidents.
  • Provides accurate, timely, and professional resolution on all supported issues.
  • Delivers a high level of professionalism and customer service.
  • Brings subject matter expertise in the virtualization operations area.
  • Provides updates to management and project leadership of all ongoing critical issues.
  • Other duties as assigned.



  • Demonstrated technical competency in the following areas:
  • Windows Server Administration (2019, 2016, or 2012r2)
  • Active Directory infrastructure (deployment/upgrades)
  • Group Policy administration/Windows security
  • Window Operating System (Windows 10)
  • VMWare Server Virtualization
  • Storage Area Networks
  • Network Communication processes
  • Patch management using multiple tools (SCCM, WSUS, etc.).
  • Proficient with DoD security assessment/hardening tools (STIG, SCAP, checklists, Nessus, etc.)
  • Knowledge of batch scripting in PowerShell, VBScript, etc.
  • Strong oral and written communications skills
  • Ability to coordinate and lead multiple projects at one time
  • Ability to apply knowledge of current industry standard systems architectures
  • Strong critical thinking skills that facilitate expedient problem-solving



  • BS Degree in Computer Science, MIS, or related field (High School Diploma and equivalent technical experience and certification may be used in lieu of BS Degree).
  • 6+ years’ experience in a technical IT role; 8+ years without BS Degree.
  • 4+ years’ system administration or engineering experience including:
    • Windows Server (2019, 2016, or 2012r2)
    • Active Directory infrastructure (deployment/upgrades)
    • Group Policy administration/Windows security
  • Active DoD SECRET clearance
  • Have or obtain requisite DoD 8570 IAT Level II certification (e.g. Security + CE) within 60 days of beginning position.
  • Work on-site due to classified system requirements.
  • Government contract requires person possess proof of U.S. citizenship.
